The Sopheinburg museum is a great place to learn about the history of New Braunfels. Its a great place to go if you are new to town or just get to know your town better. It is located in the middle of the historic discreet of the city, around many of the older homes that help add to its charm. With just a fee of eight dollars to take a tour, its a great cost effective activity to do with friends and family. Its also a great learning experience for all involved.
New Braunfels started as a Germany colony and that legacy can still be seen today with the names of street and buildings. Nicholas Zink was the man who laid out the original city plan for New Braunfels. He was also in charge of moving immigrants Carlshaven to the new colony of New Braunfels. Other important figures included Rev. L.C. Ervernburg, who opened the first orphanage in Texas and Ferdinand Lindheimer, who spoke English, German, and Spanish fluently as well as communicating with the native Americans. He also was the editor and publisher of the first Newspaper in Texas, the New-Braunfelser.
During world war II like most colonies had to cut back like everyone else. Unlike its mother country, New braunfels didn’t agree with its choices. The museum features weapons used during the war such as poisonous gas and a gas mask. They saw it as the most cowardly form of warfare, because the opponent didn’t even have a chance to defend themselves. It also features the prosthetics used during this era. They became in high demand during the war. All in all, this museum is a great learning experience and all around fun place to learn about your towns history.
