Humble Origins
Once a small one day festival to celebrate sausage started by the city meat inspector Ed Grist in 1961, is now a ten day long festival for the masses. Since its start, as sausage fest in the early years to when it expanded to a full week of activities known as Wurstweek with an array of entertainers. Finally to 1967 when it expanded its time to ten days and got the title Wurstfest. Since its early days it has been featured on many magazines and tv shows not only in the US but even in countries like Germany and China. As time goes on Wurstfest will continue to expand as their attendance is still rising every year and continue thriving.
Food and Festivities
Since sausage was the reason for starting this festival in the first place, its no wonder food plays major role still today. Beer from around the world and sausage are the two main things served, but don’t worry they will serve you sausage in so many different ways you could never get tired of it. Now for those who are not the biggest fan of beer, they offer an array of wines and spirits as well as other foods like turkey legs and fried pickles. As for those with a sweet tooth, they have all kinds of German style desserts to cure any sugar craving you might ever have. So if you don’t come to Wurstfest hungry and rest to drink, well you just are not doing it justice.
Friends and Memories
Growing up in San Antonio, about 30 minutes away froths one of a kind festival, my family regularly attended it each year. I remember as a small child being so excited to play and ride the rides in Kinderhalle and eating funnel cakes until you felt like throwing up. As I got older I saw the other side of the festival, one of dancing, drinking and eating with friends and family. Now being in college, I got with my friends and enjoy this new side of Wurstfest and will continue to go until I move away or just cannot go anymore. I love the many memories I have made here and cannot wait to make so many more.
