The Oldest Little Bakery in Texas

Sitting on the main drag of downtown is one of the cutest and oldest bakeries in Texas. The bakery turned 142 this year. Naegelins was founded by Edouard Naegelin in 1868 with his wife and family by his side.   While Naegelin and his son handled all the baking, his wife and daughter were the actual faces of the bakery. The Naegelins kept it in the family, until his grandson Clinton sold it to the Grazin family in the 1980’s.

Open my entering the bakery, I felt immediately welcomed and at home. The staff was very warm and inviting, and the smells that came from the kitchen were absolutely amazing. There were rows upon rows of goodies, from cookies to pastries, and pies galore. What was truly amazing was seeing the beautiful cakes that they made, they were so detailed and colorful I was awestruck. If you don’t walk in there with any idea of want, you want to eat you will end up like me and walk out with about six things you didn’t need.

I tried cookies, donuts, creampuffs, and eclairs and they were delicious in their own ways. My favorite was the creampuff; the pastry itself was light and fluffy and the filling was just delicious. If you went there on a regular basis it could get you in trouble with your waistband. This bakery is the oldest in Texas for a reason. It has lasted not only because of the families running it, but the delicious goodies they continue to make daily.
